The diet industry is one of the most profitable industries in the world. Why is this? There are a few theories on this. One is that nothing works, so people go from plan to plan and product to product spending money hoping that something will work. Another is that there are so many people looking to lose weight that they will spend money on just about anything if they think there is a small chance it might help them. Either way, there are a lot of people out there not losing weight and they may not know why. If you can figure out why that is, you may be able to move on to something successful.

One reason why you are not losing weight is because you are not on the right diet plan. If you are taking on a low calorie and low fat plan, you may be starving yourself. You can lose this way, but you will probably go back to your old eating habits once you have reached your goal and you shoot right back up again to your heavy weight, if not higher. You are not going to maintain because you did not adopt an eating plan that works for you.

Some women have a condition known as PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome. This is often accompanied by something call insulin resistance or pre-diabetes. If you have this, your best bet for a diet is not the low calories high carb diet that many companies offer. If you are eating a lot of carbs with insulin resistance, you are not losing weight very easily – if at all. In fact, you may be gaining and you do not know why. Try out a low carb diet like Atkins or South Beach to see if that works better for you in your weight loss endeavors.

You may also find that you are not losing weight, despite your best intentions, because you are not measuring your food in the right way. If a diet plan calls for one serving of meat, but does not specify what that serving may be, you are probably eating too much at each meal. Your calorie count may be way off from what you think you are eating. Take the time to research proper portion size and exercise portion control to get a better indication of what is supposed to be on your plate with each meal.

Most dieters do not pay enough attention to the extras they are adding to their meals. This is why they are not losing weight as the plan says they should. Extra sauces and other ingredients can add more calories than you think. This is also something to watch out for when eating out. The innocent looking meal may have huge numbers of hidden calories in just the sauce that comes on the side. If you are eating what appears to be good food, but not losing weight, skip the extras and stick to what you know. Find out how to incorporate your new eating habits into your menu for life and keep that weight off once you are done. Otherwise, you could be on the diet roller coaster for a very long time.
